Film Friday – Get Out (2017)

Love-bugs, why did I wait so long t  see this movie? Spoiler alert.

It was so good. I’m not entirely sure why The Golden Globes would label this movie a comedy, although there were a few funny parts, this was more of a thriller for me. Did I mentioned on how good it was?

Chris goes with his girlfriend Rosie to meet her parents and it is clear right away that things just aren’t right. I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this movie. Rosie seemed like such a normal character right up until the end. I thought she truly cared about Chris and would protect him from her family. Boy was I wrong. She was as much of an intricate part of the capture of those unsuspecting black folks as her family was. Her family barely tried to hide how utterly weird they were.

The premise that black people were taken, hypnotized, and then taken over like pog people was an interesting idea for a thriller/horror. I didn’t understand why black people were being kidnapped and then reprogrammed. Turns  up, white people wanted to live longer and wanted to do so in the bodies of black people. Kind of a different take the n culture appropriation in a way.

The ending was a bit extreme. I thought Chris could have just gotten away, but he had to kill everyone in the process. None of the black lives were saved.

Rose was still the biggest shock to me. I thought her completely innocent. She completely fooled me.

All of the actors were amazing but big thumbs up to Daniel Kaluuya. I’ve never seen his work before but now I want to see more. Just from the crying scenes alone I was impressed. Kudos to Jordan Peele for bringing us a new and interesting story.

I hope this film is acknowledged during awards season.
